self portrait homework assignment, where the idea was to use an entire, new ballpoint pen up in the drawing. I BASICALLY did, it probably could have scribbled a few more lines, but my hand hurt - coloring in that much black with a ball point pen on 18x24 newsprint wasn't really fun. Doesn't really look like me? But I like how the hand came out. I just hate having to do likenesses, I'm really awful at realism...I guess it's good to practice though.
I was hesitant to comment since you still haven't commented on the only new deviation I've made in forever. Nonetheless:
I think this is very successful. You've gotten better at realistic faces. Although it's not a perfect likeness, I can see a lot of your features with more realistic clarity (vs. your self-portraits in highschool). The hand is also good.
I love using ballpoint. Yeah it's a pain in the ass but the drawings end up with an interesting texture ultimately.
Oh Ian, you are so uppity. Did it ever occur that maybe I haven't commented on ANYBODYS anything in forever? I have 8,069 deviations (after going through about 500 in the past week), and 345 messages (after going through again, about 200). I've just starting posting again, so I'm making my way through messages left unchecked since early last summer, so give me a little slack.
On the other hand - thank you! The hand was really my favorite part...plus maybe the nose. I still don't think I'll ever have quite the grasp on exact portraiture that you do, but we'll see, I suppose I'll only get somewhere in practice. I love using ballpoint pen too, don't get me wrong - it's just, newsprint is so thin, I ended up having little rips everyday, and to use up all the ink in an entire pen resulted in an achy hand.

That face really pulls you into the drawing. Quite beautiful.

Beautiful self portrait! I would be afraid to draw in pen cause you can't erase or cover up mistakes @.@! I LOVE your hand is is so amazing and I like the crosshatching all over, but especially on the book!
it is kind of frightening! but it also forces you to experiment, which is nice - for me it also makes me think very carefully about how I want things, although I suppose oppositely it could also force you to be more spontaneous. Haha, and thank you! The hand/book area (plus maybe the nose) were really my favorite parts personally, so I'm glad you like them too

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
